Summer, the perfect time to soak up some sun. For many Victorian families, summer means one thing: a road trip. Whether you’re day-tripping from Melbourne or staying for the weekend, you won’t want to miss Phillip Island. The island is packed with things to do. But with high temperatures, and hangry passengers, you need a solid plan to avoid the meltdowns before they start.
Here is a simple itinerary to help you make the most of your summer escape by keeping things fun and delicious.
Morning: Meet the ‘Locals’

Start your day by getting to know the local wildlife at the Koala Conservation Reserve. It’s the heartwarming spot amongst the natural habitat of koalas and other animals. You can wander the boardwalks to warm up your legs for a full day of adventure.
We recommend getting there in the morning, when the temperature is cooler and the koalas tend to be more active. The exploration usually takes about an hour, leaving you plenty of time for the next stop.

If your family prefers farm life, Churchill Island Heritage Farm is nearby. You can explore the historic grounds and watch traditional demos, such as cow milking and whip cracking. The visit makes an interactive stop for little ones that serves up a slice of history.
Lunch: Grab The Ultimate Beach Pack

By now, your group must be hungry. In summer, the popular cafes on the main street can get very crowded. And who wants to wait forty-five minutes for a table when the beach is calling?
No worries! Pika Sushi Cowes is ready to save the day. Located in the heart of town, we are the perfect stop to grab a healthy and convenient lunch. Avoid the afternoon slump by grabbing something light, like a few Raw Salmon Avocado Handrolls or a Chicken Katsu Bento Box. They’re easy to carry and eat anywhere, and great for a picnic.
Afternoon: Hit the Sand or Solve a Puzzle
Cowes Main Beach
With your lunch sorted, it’s time to head down to Cowes Main Beach. The afternoon is the right time to find a spot on the sand and relax while the kids burn off some energy. Facing north into Western Port Bay, the water is calmer than the Bass Strait coast, making it generally safer for swimming and wading. On a clear day, you can even spot the Mornington Peninsula and French Island.

A Maze’n Things

If the sun gets too intense, or the weather turns, head over to A Maze’n Things. Opened 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., this theme park offers a mix of interactive entertainment for the whole family. Get amazed by the optical illusions or puzzles that exercise your motor skills and memory. Or, solve the challenging 3D maze that is adventurous for families.
Evening: Watch The Main Event

You can’t go home without seeing the famous residents of Phillip Island at the Penguin Parade. Watching the colony waddle back to their nests at sunset is an experience you must see for yourself.
A few tips for the parade: book your visit early, as the tickets sell out fast in summer. Aim to get there at least 1 hour before the parade starts. Last but least, it’s better to wear warm clothes during summer night, and turn off your camera flash to protect the penguins’ eyes.
After a big day of sun and wildlife, don’t forget to wind down. Before heading back home (or to your accommodation), swing by Pika Sushi for a quick dinner or takeaway for the road. Have a great trip!
