Road Trip from Melbourne: Hidden Food Gems Across Phillip Island

Planning a Phillip Island road trip? We’re mapping out the best food stops, starting with the perfect start before you hit the highway to the local spots after.

Table of Contents

Phillip Island offers many fantastic options for a weekend getaway, both for adventurers and foodies alike. Once you cross the bridge at San Remo, you’re ready for a route of wonderful coastline views. But a great trip deserves great food. This is our guide to turning your Phillip Island drive into a proper food trail.

The Smart Start: Pick up Fresh Fuel Before The Coast

Before you hit the road, make sure you’ve packed your main meal before you’re stuck in highway traffic. Something that is convenient, light, and delicious is the perfect start for your day trip.

You can order a platter in advance and pick it up on your way to your first beach stop. If you’re passing through Gippsland, you’ll spot Pika Sushi stores in places like Ferntree Gully and Drouin. Our platters can feed the whole family, such as the Regular Sushi Platter, with 48 pieces of sushi and you can load it up with favourites like Avocado Cucumber and Chicken Avocado.

Pair Your Food with a View

Now you’ve got the food. Where to eat it? Here’s our recommendations.

Smiths Beach

This is the spot if you want a natural coastal vibe. Popular with surfers, it’s also perfect for a picnic. Find a spot on the sand, and maybe go exploring the rock pools when the tide is low.

The Nobbies & Seal Rocks

Take a stroll along the boardwalks of The Nobbies and soak in the dramatic views of the coastline. Find a bench overlooking the sea and watch the sea birds or, sometimes, sharks.  It’s a stunning spot for a quick snack. Around one kilometre offshore is Seal Rocks, where you can witness a colony of seals sunbathe on the rocks.

Cape Woolamai

The Cape Woolamai Circuit Walk is one of the best hikes on the island, with incredible clifftop views. It’s a solid trek, and a sushi handroll is the perfect energy snack to pack for the summit. Before you go, it’s always best to check the weather, wear hiking shoes, and watch your steps.

Where the Locals Eat

After your seaside sushi stop, it’s time to keep the fun going by exploring the local gems. There are dozens of big-name tourist spots, but the local favourites have their own charm.

Good Vibes at The Store

Tucked away in Ventnor, this place is one of local favourites, where visitors can grab excellent coffee and comforting toasties. Even more fun, this spot is pet friendly (enquire first) and you can see a board of cute dog photos from visitors (maybe yours can be there, too!).

If you’re feeling the need for something unique and green, this cafe at Chapel St., Cowes, is the spot. Their all-day breakfast and lunch menu are plant-based, serving up house made smoothies, organic speciality lattes, kids menu, and wholesome pancakes.

Classic Italian Snack at Isola di Capri Restaurant & Gelateria

Opened at 12:00 every day, Isola di Capri is an alternative if you’re not in for a full meal. It’s a family-run Italian restaurant in Cowes that’s been around since 1972, serving pizza and pasta. And if you opt for an authentic homemade, their gelateria is just next door for three scoops of gelato.
